If you’ve been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) one of your biggest priorities should be finding a lawyer. A person charged with DUI could face jail time, monetary consequences amounting to more than $10,000, license revocation, and of course a bad reputation, so having the right counsel and representation is important for fighting your case and reducing the chances of dealing with some of those consequences. Here are a few red flags that could indicate a bad DUI defense lawyer and someone you don’t want to hire.
1. Making Promises.
Usually, if a criminal defense lawyer is making you promises this is not a good sign. He or she may have an idea of what the outcome of your case might be or might be able to cite earlier cases, but should never be making promises. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
2. Bad Experience.
This is true for any type of lawyer, but you should always check into their background to see what their experience is. It’s good to see how long he or she has been in practice, but what’s more important is looking into their case history and how successful they were handling cases like yours. Don’t be afraid to address this with the lawyer and ask about how they plan to handle your case and what they see as a likely outcome.
3. Unethical Behavior.
This is a huge red flag. If you notice any sketchy or shady behavior from a potential lawyer, you should probably avoid him or her altogether. Your lawyer should be a reliable and trustworthy person and their actions could have a negative effect on your case, so make sure that he or she has good ethics.
